West Catholic went into last week with a lot on the line and a lot to prove as far as the outcome of the OK Blue Conference was to be concerned. After winning all three games the Falcons found themselves alone on top of the league standings with a 5-1 record.
In game one of the doubleheader on Tuesday at Comstock Park, Travis Rosinski started a 4 run two out rally in the top of the third inning with a double which was immediately followed by a Corey Murphy RBI single. The inning continued with an infield hit by Andy Woodruff and a Mark Buitendyk single to load the bases. Then just as the innings started with a double Kevin Manser delivered another two bagger that scored a couple more runs. The inning ended on a Derrick Lewis RBI single to score the fourth West Catholic run but Manser was thrown out at the plate trying to score from second. That one inning would prove to be all the runs the Falcons would need as Derrick Lewis scattered three runs and struck out five for the victory. Corey Murphy picked up the save getting the final four outs of the game. Manser, Murphy, and Buitendyk all had two hits for West Catholic.
In game two West Catholic scored two runs in the first and two in the second to jump out to an early 4-0 lead, and then held on in the seventh for a wild 4-3 victory. Andy Corey had two hits and scored two runs for the Falcons, while Corey Murphy had a couple of hits and a couple of RBI. Mark Buitendyk also added two hits including a double and a RBI. Travis Rosinski rounded things out offensively with and RBI single. Trent Clark picked up the win on the mound in game two and Corey Murphy earned another save. It was a heads up West Catholic defense in the bottom of the seventh that put this one in the win column. With a runner on third and the trying run on second with two outs, Corey Murphy delivered a wild pitch and catcher Mark Buitendyk’s throw to the plate was wild allowing one run to score. The runner on second never stopped around third, but first baseman Derrick Lewis was in perfect backup position and threw a stike to Murphy covering home for a bang bang third out and the Falcons victory. Final score WC 4 – Comstock Park 3.
Then on Thursday the single game site moved to West Catholic and this time the Falcons could only muster three hits through 5 innings and waited till the bottom of the seventh to pull off the 3-2 victory. It was the bottom of the sixth when the Falcons scored two runs on only one hit, a Kevin Manser RBI single which tied the score 2-2. Then on to the bottom of the seventh when the Falcons scored the winning run without a hit for the win. Travis Rosinski picked up the game winning RBI with a bases loaded walk off base on balls scoring Derrick Lewis who led off the inning safe on an error. Manser had two hits in the contest for West Catholic. Corey Murphy started the game on the mound for the Falcons but did not figure in the decision. Trent Clark picked up his second win of the week in relief.
The Falcons return home Saturday for a non-conference doubleheader against the Northview Wildcats. To accommodate the Prom, first game starts at 9 AM.
