The West Catholic athletic department is pleased to announce the hiring of Kirk Kambestad, as the Varsity Boys Basketball Coach at West Catholic.

Coach Kambestad replaces Assistant Principal Tony Fischer, who left the coaching ranks to focus more time on developing teacher growth and best practices, building culture, and student discipline.  On the decision, Fischer says, “I was blessed to develop lifelong relationships with many players, coaches, and parents.  Our program spent time to develop these young men both on and off the court.  We were very proud to have coached the first conference and district championship team at West in over 40 years.  Also, the development of the youth program, which is now over 200 Kindergarten-4th graders, is special.  The program will be in good hands with Coach Kambestad leading the way.”

Coach Kambestad coached for a number of years under Thom VanderKlay at Wyoming Park and went on to be the girl’s varsity basketball coach there for 6 years, amassing a record of 84-44 with 2 conference championships.  He then became the girl’s varsity coach at Wyoming High School for 3 years, finishing with a record of 61-10 with 3 conference championships and 2 district titles.

“I’m very excited to be coaching at West Catholic, I know the student-athletes I’ll be coaching will be very driven and focused on being the best they can be. I know many of the coaches at the school and I’m excited to be a part of that group.  I really appreciate Mr. Krynicki giving me this opportunity to be the head men’s varsity basketball coach.  At West Catholic, our coaches will coach with passion and energy. Our basketball program will be focused on skills and player development. ”

Coach Kambestad has a son, Kobe, 13 and a daughter, Lucy, 9.

Welcome to West Catholic, Coach Kambestad!
