Falcons News · Mallory Eliopoulos Competes in Her Last Ski Run as a Falcon.

For four years Mallory has strived to get the West Catholic girls ski team to States.  Every year at the Regional Meet her words were, “ok, next year”.  This year, again, Mallory’s hope is that “next year” the girls make it; but it will be without her as part of the team, at least as a skier:  Perhaps she can help on the coaching staff.  Somehow, she will be a part of that. The last time the girls went to the State Meet as a team was 2007, Mallory was in 5th grade.

Mallory did qualify for the State meet as an individual in both the slalom and giant slalom (GS) for the fourth year.  Being her last chance, Mallory’s goal was to make first team All-State; and that she did.  Her best event, the GS, landed her a 2nd place, silver medal podium finish with a combined time of 50.71: A scant .24 seconds behind first place finisher.  This is enough to qualify her for a spot on the All-State First Team.  Mallory also nailed the slalom course with an 8th place finish.  The field included 70 female athletes.

After this accomplished season, Mallory received the Burger King Athlete of the Week for the week of February 24, 2014. This award puts her in the running for a $1,000 scholarship. Congratulations to Mallory for a fine high school skiing career.

Matthew Urbik in the finish arena at State Meet after his slalom run.

Matthew Urbik was excited to be participating in his first MHSAA State Ski Meet, which was held Monday February 24, 2014 at Nub’s Nob in Harbor Springs MI.  Urbik, a junior this year, qualified to compete as an individual in the slalom race. The competitor field in the men’s slalom race included 69 competitors.  Urbik finished his first run with a 38.24 time for a 31st place finish; his second run time was 37.89 for a 41st place finish.  The race result, which is a combine first and second run time was a 1:16.13 for a very respectable 34th place overall finish.

Urbik indicated his eagerness to qualify for states as a team in the 2015 season. The men came very close this year to qualifying at regionals, held at Caberfae two week ago. The last time the West Catholic men qualified for the state meet as a team was in 1997 where the team finished 7th. To meet this challenge, Urbik is planning to train at events that are available through local ski groups and motivating other team members to participate as well.  Congratulations, Matthew, on a fine season and best of luck in 2015.
