Last Friday night, the Mattawan Wildcats traveled to Grand Rapids to take on West at Griff’s Ice House for both teams first game of the season. Mattawan jumped out to an early lead seven minutes into the first period. West would answer a minute later when Joey Kolenda put home a rebound off of a faceoff play. Joey won the draw to Nathan Szyszko who moved the puck towards Corbin Venckus who fired a wrist shot on goal where Kolenda banged it home. The remainder of the period was scoreless. Just over two minutes into the second period, Kolenda would strike again. Jaydon Moleski moved the puck up to Avery Matthews in the neutral zone who shot the puck past the Mattawan defenseman after he skated across the blue line. Kolenda was at the right place at the right time again, as he scored his second off of the rebound of the Matthews shot. The score remained two to one after two periods of play. Mattawan outshot the Falcons 16 to 7 in the 3rd but could not score the game tying goal. Goaltender Noah Herzhaft stopped 16 shots in the 3rd period and 31 out of 32 shots for game and got the win between the pipes. West will play next on Friday, November 24th at Griffs Ice Arena verse rival Grand Rapids Northview in OK Conference action.
